Funding Announced for CAS-run Courses

Funding Announced for CAS-run Courses

By Mark Chester, 21 July 2015

We are delighted to announce that members of the Consulting Arborist Society can access financial support for attending the various courses run by the society, subject to meeting certain criteria.  The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills is supporting arborists to develop training via the Forestry Learning Network, which has advised that all of the CAS courses are suitable for support.

The scheme is available for consulting arborists who are based in or operate within England, are aged at least 19 and undertake at least half their work in arboriculture or forestry.

How does it work?  The individual joins the Forestry Learning Network (cost £140 + VAT) and agrees a programme of professional development.  Training is then subsidised, with the individual paying £6 + VAT for each hour of training.  So if the individual attends the one day Mortgage course lasting 6 hours and costing £150 + VAT, they pay 6 x £6 (£36 + VAT) with the Forestry Learning Network paying the balance to the Consulting Arborist Society.

For individuals taking the Bond Solon training, a total of 30 hours of training has been identified across the five days.  These would be subsidised by £30 per hour (a total of £900) in addition to the other savings.

The funding is available until 2017, and is limited to just 250 individuals.  To register YOUR interest, contact Mark Chester at mark@consultingarboristsociety.com or funding co-ordinator Emily Maclean at emily.maclean@ruraldevelopment.org.uk

Last Few Places for TPO Course

Last Few Places for TPO Course

By Mark Chester, 20 October 2014

Due to high demand, additional places have been made available for CAS members for this one day course hosted by Malvern Hills District Council. Led by Richard Nicholson, the course will cover the core principles for making effective Tree Preservation Orders, and administering them. It explores the role of local authority and consultant. There will be a special member offer for tree officers attending, and remember that you don't need to be a tree expert to benefit from the course. It is important that those involved in the process appreciate the parameters in which they operate. Cost is £60 + VAT for the seminar and £60 + VAT for those who also wish to complete the Lantra assessment, which is highly recommended for CAS members, and will qualify you for inclusion in the directory under the Tree Preservation category.

Guaranteeing Planting Success Part 1

Guaranteeing Planting Success Part 1

By Dr Glynn Percival and Keith Sacre, 03 March 2014

The Plant Health Index

How can you be sure you are buying plant stock that will thrive? Wouldn’t you like to be able to reassure your clients that your landscape scheme will succeed? A visual inspection of the new trees was generally the only way to assess the health of the tree. The problem with this approach is that symptoms of ill health may not appear until it’s too late.

Enter the Plant Health Index, the new benchmark for physiological health of nursery trees. This is a rating system designed by Barcham Trees which acts as an early warning system to ensure the trees you buy are thriving.

Years of Dedicated Research

Working together, Barcham Trees and Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories have collated data over a four year period using leaf fluorescence, chlorophyll content and electrolyte leakage. Over 60,000 trees have been tested over the whole period involving some 300,000 individual leaf samples and over 300 species and cultivars.

This system can be extended into the landscape following planting allowing for an assessment of tree vitality measured against known criteria.

Want to Learn More

Keith Sacre of Barcham Trees and Glynn Percival from Bartlett Research Laboratories will deliver a joint presentation explaining why the nursery decided to invest in such extensive research, the value of such a benchmarking system to professionals involved in urban tree management and the science behind the tests used.

The presentation is part of CASTech at Capel Manor College on Friday 2nd May 2014. For more information and booking contact mark@consultingarboristsociety.com.

Seminar Content

The publication of BS 8545 Young Trees: From Nursery to Independence in the Landscape is imminent. The document has been four years in preparation and offers a completely new perspective on the process of successfully taking young trees from the nursery to independent features in the landscape.

This seminar series will explain the thinking behind the document, focus on the contents and offer further explanations where necessary.

The series will be delivered by Keith Sacre, Chairman of the drafting panel, accompanied by members of the team including Jeremy Barrell and others.

Here is your opportunity to question, clarify, and discuss the whole project with the people who have been involved in the drafting process over the last four years.
